In 1926, the Imperial, Chrysler’s top of the line performance and luxury option became a model in its own right and an instant legend. Its astonishing looks were matched by its quickness and speed. Two years later, further design changes upped the ante even further. The 1930 saw the continued tradition of luxurious power; however, changes in the economy with the market crash brought demand close to a standstill. Very few CL Imperials were produced. The 1932 and 1933 CLs are considered to be Chrysler’s finest and most desirable automobile.
This truly stunning 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual Cowl Phaeton is a rare luxury automobile. Featuring coachwork by LeBaron, only 151 Custom Imperials were produced, with only 36 being Dual Cowl Phaetons. Out of those 36, less than 20 remain in existence today. This car was part of the Imperial Palace collection. Equipped with the original 135bhp 384.84 cubic inch inline eight-cylinder L-head engine, Stromberg 2V model EE-3 carburetor, automatic vacuum clutch, stamped steel ladder type chassis, semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension, and four-wheel Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes, this CL was the pinnacle of engineering in its era. In addition this car has been recently maintained and is in excellent working condition. The undercarriage is excellent as well. All interior trim and seats remain in excellent condition. The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was the company's top of the range vehicle for much of its history.
The Chrysler Imperial was redesigned in 1931. The car received a new engine, a 6.3 L I8. Marketing materials for this generation of Imperial referred to the car as the "Imperial 8" in reference to the new engine. The engine would be found in many other Chrysler vehicles. The redesign also saw the introduction of new wire wheels that would became the standard wheel treatment until the 1940s. Stock car driver Harry Hartz set numerous speed records with an Imperial sedan at Daytona Beach, Florida.
